  57. For sale: Atari ST Maple version 4.2
  58.  
  59. Maple is a symbolic algebra package, capable of doing algebra and
  60. calculus on all sorts of expressions. It can also graph functions and
  61. numerically integrate things it can't do symbolic. Much faster than
  62. looking up those nasty integrals in your nasty 1,000 page book of
  63. integrals written by some poor souls locked away in a Siberian labor
  64. camp.

  66. This program is similar to other packages like Mathematica, Macsyma,
  67. and Derive. It sells for $400 (list price).
  68.  
  69. Includes all manuals (tutorial, reference, Atari installation), and
  70. the original distribution disks in shrink-wrap. Requires about 4
  71. megabytes of disk space, plus at least 1 megabyte of ram, preferably
  72. more. I don't know if it will run on a TT or not.

  85. Has anyone else used Diamond Back II for HD backups ???  If so, have
  86. you successfully restored files ???

  88. I recently started using it for the first time and after backing up
  89. my C: partition to a dozen double sided floppies (compressed, file
  90. splitting allowed), I tried to restore to another partition.  The
  91. first floppy seemed to go ok, but when I got to the second, it was
  92. skipped over in just a couple of seconds.  Then when I inserted the
  93. 3rd as requested, I got an error message claiming that the next file
  94. had been compressed with the wrong number of bits.
  95.  
  96. I tried a second time (I completely resaved the partition first) and
  97. this time when I got to the second disk I got an error message claiming
  98. the diskette was unlabelled.
  99.  
  100. Another problem I've had is that the automatic disk switching doesn't
  101. seem to be working correctly.  If I insert the next disk while another
  102. is being used and press the drive letter as I understood the instructions,
  103. I still don't get automatic switching when the first disk is completed.

  348. You must alao ensure that the format track buffer in the program is big
  349. enough. Many variable format programs are useless in this respect unless
  350. the source is fixed to give a larger buffer. I stopped using the format
  351. program that was distributed way back when with STart magazine because it
  352. will not format more than 14 sectors. Now I usually use KnifeST from HiSoft
  353. for formatting as it gives complete flexibility over all format parameters.

  375. Your problem is that AES is initialized and expects a menu bar in the TOP
  376. row. This means that when the mouse is in the TOP row AES gives mouse control
  377. to the MENU manager.
  378. One solution is not use AES at all not even for event polling. Use AES only
  379. if you want to use menu's and dialogs.
  380. There are VDI functions that can perform this task for you. Describing them
  381. here would be to much so I suggest that you get your hands on a good book
  382. about VDI (Profibuch) and try to figure out how to use VDI for this.
  383. If you run into a specific problem that VDI cannot solve according to your
  384. knowlegde ask again.

  473. I don't know the exact number of Abaq transputer machines that were made,
  474. but I am under the impression that the number is in the low hundreds at
  475. best.  It ran a new somewhat-buggy OS that supported parallel processing
  476. and is used in a few universities in Europe.

  479. R&D cost.

  531. Does anybody who uses ST Minix read this newsgroup (anymore) ? Frans
  532. Meulenbroeks (who's name is on the COVER of the ST Minix vers. 1.5
  533. manual ) I know shows up occasionally. anyone else ?

  535. What to do if you want to use partitions BEYOND /dev/hd4 on ST Minix
  536. 1.5 from Prentis-Hall ? Well..... you have to upgrade(=patch) Minix
  537. from version 1.5.10.0 (the version SHIPPED by Prentis-Hall) to at
  538. least version 1.5.10.3 and recompile the thing...... Yes, it DOES
  539. work!!! The patches are available somewhere on plains.nodak.edu for
  540. anonymous ftp.
  541. Now, if you want to be able to use MORE than 5 partitions at one time
  542. (Which is a different matter than using partitions out beyond
  543. /dev/hd4) you'll have to change a #define somewhere. Since I haven't
  544. done it I don't remember where it is..... 4 partitons is more than
  545. enough for my purposes.

  569. First, thank your for your quick answer. But the problem, I have, is
  570. where to poke the font address to. In my programs I user my own fonts,
  571. too. But I wrote them with TOS 1.02. Now, after I installed TOS 1.04,
  572. texts aren't displayed with MY fonts when I use the GfA-Basic TEXT
  573. command. Using TOS 1.02, the address was $8820, but now?! The TOS font
  574. address (the address where to poke the font location to) is still SUB(L%A,
  575. 22).

  624. after 6pm, before 6am, or on weekends.  Otherwise all services are $18/hour
  625. (ouch!) or $24/hour for 9600 baud (Double ouch!).

  682. comp.sys.atari.st.  The bombardment of computer sales over this facility
  683. tells me that the experienced (but not developer) users are leaving atari
  684. for more prestigious computer systems.  This is great news because we should
  685. see a new wave of enthusiastic users who got a really good deal on the
  686. computer that provides power without the price (and in this case really
  687. without the price).

  689. This prompts me to re-encourage us to make the atari archives as user
  690. friendly as possible.  This includes documentation to set up
  691.  
  692.   - MiNT
  693.   - command line editors/shells (bash, gulam, ksh)
  694.   - TeX/LaTeX
  695.   - Uniterm Macros
  696.   - Sozobon C (I think the easy to install package already exists)

  717. And here is what to do:
  718. 1)      Take out the old (720k) drive.
  719. 2)      Put in the new one.
  720. 3)      It works.

  722. Allthough this works, I wouldn't recommend doing it, since the WD1772-chip isn't
  723. supposed to be able to cope with 16 Mhz. Wait for the new chip from atari !!

  725. Note: You have to have your own software to FORMAT HD-disks, but TOS will
  726. automagically read/write HD/normal disks. If you have source to a floppy-
  727. formatter, just change number of sectors to 18 instead of 9 and recompile.
  728. You will then have a HD-formatter.
  729. Also if you have Tos >= 3.05, you can set a DIP-switch so that you may
  730. format HD-disks from the desktop.

  814. Why don't you simply use CS-TeX, available from several atari servers via ftp.
  815. This program sets up EVERYTHING, the INSTALL.PRG builds all the right files,
  816. directories etc.

  819. There's an automated Metafont that makes all fonts for your output device(s)
  820. automatically, either on the fly as you need them, or as an overnight job.

  823. save on disk space.  And of course there's a Panasonic printer driver.

  1008. In mail to me, Lars-Erik Osterud remarks that some games didn't work under
  1009. some TOSes because TOS uses Timer A, which is "reserved for applications."
  1010.  
  1011. What happened is that TOS used that timer DURING BOOT, which is perfectly
  1012. reasonable.  After the boot sequence, it does not use that timer.  However,
  1013. it left the timer and its interrupt channel in a state other than the reset
  1014. state.  If the game programmer had not made assumptions about the state of
  1015. that timer, the game would have worked.
  1016.  
  1017. The same thing would happen if you ran some other program before the game,
  1018. using old TOS, and that program used Timer A (legally) but left it in a
  1019. state other than the reset state.  Correct programs do not assume anything
  1020. about a resource like this, and approach it carefully. Incorrect programs
  1021. might, for example, unmask the interrupt before they install the vector,
  1022. because they think it's not enabled or the timer isn't running.
  1023.  
  1024. The newest TOS leaves that timer in the same state it boots up in: with the
  1025. interrupt disabled and the timer stopped.  This is an example of the other
  1026. kind of pain we go through in the name of compatibility: we even try to
  1027. make badly-written programs continue to work.
  1028.  
  1029. Finally, for everybody: any time you refer to "some programs" not working,
  1030. PLEASE name the programs, so we can check out the reasons here.  We run new
  1031. TOSes on our library, but we don't have all programs in the library, and we
  1032. don't try them in all ways.  If you can name a program that doesn't work,
  1033. we want to hear it so we can investigate.  If it doesn't just bomb on
  1034. start-up or something, then explain how to make it fail.

  1052. people sparing a few dollars for the ROM's by using a disk. You loose
